Pond water is the habitat of your fish, and water quality is particularly important for their health. Therefore, the pond water should always show optimal values so that the pond provides an ideal living environment for your fish and plants. With the examination of your pond water and the results of a water analysis - also available on new generation smartphones - various components such as ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, salinity, and water temperature can be evaluated, and immediate action can be taken if necessary to prevent damage and ensure optimal water quality. Ammonia is converted from ammonium in a natural process. Ammonium is excreted by fish as a waste product (via gills and urine) and is relatively non-toxic. Any ammonia present in pond water poses a serious health threat to fish and pond inhabitants. It is converted by bacteria in the filter into less toxic nitrite. Nitrite is normally further processed into non-toxic nitrate. Nitrite (NO2) should not be measurable in pond water. At a concentration of 0.4 mg/l, it becomes dangerous to lethal for fish, as nitrite blocks oxygen transport in the animals' blood. Nitrate is the end product of mineralization in the pond and is non-toxic to fish even in relatively high concentrations, but it adversely affects plant growth and the well-being of some fish species. Excessively high nitrate levels also promote undesirable algae growth if phosphate is also present in the water in addition to nitrate. Salt is an important aid for medical treatments of your fish and for algae control. In a pond with healthy fish and a balanced ecosystem, no salt should be present. Deviant water values can have fatal consequences for your fish. Especially in newly established ponds, water parameters should be checked daily through water analysis.
