Why test:
Nitrite is produced during the breakdown of protein and ammonium by bacteria. It is normally further processed into non-toxic nitrate. Nitrite (NO2) should not be detectable in pond water. If nitrite is detectable, the bacterial decomposition process is disturbed, and at a concentration of 0.4 mg/l, it becomes dangerous to lethal for fish, as nitrite blocks oxygen transport in the animals' blood. Water changes provide relief.
