The sterlet is a species of fish from the sturgeon family. With a length of about 1.20 m, it belongs to the smaller species of the group. The sterlet lives in rivers in the catchment areas of the Caspian, Black, Azov, and Arctic Seas, as well as in rivers and lakes in Northern Russia and some tributaries of the Baltic Sea. In the Danube, it penetrates as far as Bavaria. Through stocking, it can now also be found in some gravel pits in Central Europe. Unlike other sturgeons, it does not migrate to the sea. The sterlet is a rheophilic bottom dweller that prefers flowing waters and occasionally occurs in brackish water. Spawning sterlets migrate upriver from April to June, where they spawn on gravel. A female can lay more than 10,000 eggs, which stick to stones. After hatching in four to five days, the fry are carried away by the current. Males reach sexual maturity after about 3 to 5 years, and females after 7 to 9 years.
The sterlet feeds mainly on invertebrates such as worms, snails, insect larvae, and small crustaceans. In winter, the fish seeks out deeper, calmer areas. It can now also be found in some gravel pits in Central Europe. Unlike other sturgeons, it does not migrate to the sea.
