Please note that we do not ship fish by mail. All fish must be picked up from us in Oberweningen. We will pack the fish professionally and ensure sufficient oxygenation. This means that even longer transports can be managed without problems. The sterlet is a species of fish from the sturgeon family. With a length of about 1.20 m, it is one of the smaller species in the group. The sterlet lives in rivers in the catchment areas of the Caspian, Black, Azov, and Arctic Seas, as well as in rivers and lakes of northern Russia and some tributaries of the Baltic Sea. In the Danube, it penetrates as far as Bavaria. Due to stocking, it can now also be found in some gravel pits in Central Europe. Unlike other sturgeons, it does not migrate to the sea. The sterlet is a rheophilic bottom dweller that loves flowing water and occasionally occurs in brackish water. Spawning-ready sterlets migrate up the rivers from April to June, where they spawn on gravel. A female can lay more than 10,000 eggs, which stick to stones. After hatching after four to five days, the fry are carried away by the current. Males reach sexual maturity after about 3 to 5 years, and females after 7 to 9 years.

The sterlet feeds mainly on invertebrates such as worms, snails, insect larvae, and small crustaceans. In winter, the fish seeks deeper, calmer zones. Meanwhile also in some gravel pits in Central Europe. Unlike other sturgeons, it does not migrate to the sea.
