Caret Down

Please note that we do not ship fish by mail. All fish must be picked up from us in Oberweningen. We will professionally package your fish and ensure sufficient oxygenation. This means that even longer transports can be handled without problems. Our staff will also be happy to provide you with information regarding transport and the correct introduction of the fish into your pond.

Origin and Appearance
The Shubunkin is a Japanese cultivated form of the common goldfish and is also called "scarlet-patterned goldfish". It is red and bluish-white, with black spots all over its body. Shubunkin have a very large, wedge-shaped caudal fin, which in some specimens can make up half of the total body length. The other fins are also rather long and partly black-spotted.

The attractive overall appearance and carefree keeping make this representative of the goldfish family one of the most popular pond fish ever!

Keeping and Feeding
Shubunkin are easy to keep. They are strong, robust and not very susceptible to diseases. They do not need large water surfaces to feel comfortable, so they can also live well in small ponds. Shubunkin can grow up to 35cm long and live for 15 - 20 years.

Shubunkin feed on insects and aquatic plants, but readily accept high-quality goldfish or koi pellets. They like to rummage on the bottom, so they appreciate particles or fine gravel at the bottom.

They are very active and sociable animals that should never be kept alone. We recommend a group of 3 or more. Due to their good-natured nature, they can be easily socialized with other pond fish, preferably with other goldfish or koi, which they readily join as schoolmates.

The spawning season for Shubunkin is between April and May. During the spawning season, male fish show a so-called breeding rash on their heads and gill covers, while female fish are considerably plumper during this time. Males are sexually mature from the age of 2 and females only from the age of 3. The young fish are inconspicuous in color and only develop their typical color pattern after their first year of life.

Good water values are a prerequisite for keeping Shubunkin, so a filter system and oxygenation are essential for the well-being of the animals.

Water Temperatures and Wintering
Shubunkin are cold-water fish and can cope with a wide variety of conditions. They can tolerate temperatures between 4 - 28 °C well. Wintering in our domestic garden ponds is therefore not a problem.
