The common nase (Chondrostoma nasus) is a freshwater fish found in Central Europe north of the Alps to Eastern Europe. It can grow up to 50-60 cm long and weigh up to 2 kg.

The common nase is a gregarious bottom-dwelling fish that lives in the fast-flowing sections of mid-river courses, but can also adapt to life in the stagnant water of various reservoirs. Nases form large shoals, often numbering several hundred individuals, which are often easily discernible from the bank.

The main characteristics of the common nase:

  • the body of the nase is elongated, spindle-shaped and almost oval in cross-section
  • the back of the nase is grayish-greenish and darker than the rest of its body
  • the flanks of the nase are silvery and often show a metallic sheen. The belly of the nase is whitish to yellowish, the fins are usually grayish-red to yellowish-red
  • the head of the nase is relatively small and almost conical in shape
  • its transverse mouth slit is inferior, the lower jaw of the nase has a hard, horny coating
  • the upper lip of the nase is enlarged into a thick, nose-like appendage (distance between the mouth slit and the "nose" upper side is greater than the eye diameter)
  • the scales of the nase are medium-sized
  • both sexes have a spawning rash on the head, which is more pronounced in males. Females show a reddish belly during spawning season

Size

The common nase (Chondrostoma nasus) grows to a maximum length of 50-60 cm, with an average length of approx. 25-30 cm. The maximum published weight of a nase is 1.5 kg, but it can weigh up to approx. 2 kg.

The common nase (Chondrostoma nasus) lives for a maximum of about 15 to 20 years and is widespread in Europe: it occurs in Central Europe north of the Alps to Eastern Europe. The nase can now also be found in the Elbe catchment area. The nase is particularly common in the Rhine and Danube regions.

It is absent from Scandinavia, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Southern France and the Iberian Peninsula. The nase prefers fast-flowing waters (barbel and grayling regions). Nases are crepuscular and nocturnal fish.

Nases (Chondrostoma nasus) are dietary specialists. They feed mainly on plant growth (algae) on stones and other substrates, which they graze using the hard, scraper-like coating of their lower jaw. Nases also consume smaller bottom-dwelling invertebrates.

When foraging on the bottom, nases often turn sideways, revealing themselves by the flashing of their silver flanks.
