Pond and bog edge planting, riparian zone, pond plant (in water)
The Japanese scouring rush (Equisetum hyemale Japonicum) differs from the basic form by its slightly larger growth and an overall lighter color. Although scouring rushes are found throughout the northern hemisphere, they are (at least in Germany) highly endangered, as river straightening and drainage of wet meadows mean that scouring rushes find fewer and fewer habitats. The plant is also not common in trade, or is easily overlooked, as its beauty often does not reveal itself to the viewer at first glance.

However, once the Japanese scouring rush has been successfully planted in the soil or pond (planting depth up to 40 cm water height), the plant is undemanding and vigorous. The soil texture can range from sandy to peaty to humous; good permeability and, if possible, permanent moisture of the substrate are important for the Japanese scouring rush. Once the plant has adapted to the location, it propagates via creeping rhizomes, from which runners are formed. The Japanese scouring rush is a shallow-rooted plant whose roots do not penetrate deep into the soil. Generative propagation (propagation via fruiting bodies) plays only a minor role. Although small, oval fruits appear in autumn on the inconspicuous, brownish flowers that emerge from July to August, these often fall into the water or onto wet ground, where they then rot. More interesting is the "leaf," which is actually the plant stem. Individual stems can grow up to 130 cm tall. They are light green to yellowish in color and, typical of horsetail, are divided into several segments, which are separated by brownish "joints." This creates a very beautiful pattern that immediately catches the eye in the garden and looks like a colorful wall. This appearance makes the Japanese scouring rush very special and unique.
