The common rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus, is also known as the false roach, rudd, golden roach, or red bream and belongs to the carp family (Cyprinidae). It is found in Europe, from the Urals, the Caspian Sea, and the Aral Sea, all the way to the Pyrenees. Scardinius erythrophthalmus is a very popular pond fish. It should be kept in shoals of at least 5 specimens. The pond should hold no less than 3,000 liters.
Scardinius erythrophthalmus grows to between 20 and 30 cm and weighs up to 300 g. The rudd differs from the roach in its mouth, which is superior in the rudd and terminal in the roach. Also, the dorsal fin begins behind the pelvic fins, in contrast to the roach, whose fins are vertically aligned. The iris of the rudd is yellow, not red, like that of the roach.
The rudd is a schooling fish that thrives in predominantly shallow, soft-bottomed, and plant-rich, slow-flowing waters.
It feeds mainly on algae and aquatic plants - sometimes also on invertebrates. Therefore, the rudd is often used for algae control.
The oxygen requirement of this carp fish is relatively low. It is a typical summer fish that spawns at water temperatures around 18° Celsius from April to July. In the winter months, rudds seek deeper water zones and significantly reduce their metabolism. For overwintering, the pond should be at least 100 cm deep.
