Low-salt electrolysis/hydrolysis has become a very popular disinfection method in recent years, both for swimming pools and swimming ponds/biopools. The great advantage is that in hydrolysis, strong disinfectants are produced from water by splitting the water into O and H atoms. These O and H atoms can then form the following oxidizing agents: O (atomic oxygen), O2 (oxygen), O3 (ozone), H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide), and OH (radical hydroxide). These oxidizing agents are just as strong - even stronger - than chlorine (see table), but they do not produce negative by-products (such as chloramines). After reacting with an organic substance, the atoms combine back into water. At salt concentrations of 1.5 - 2 g/l, a very small amount of free chlorine is also produced, which provides a depot effect in the swimming pool. For swimming ponds, a maximum salt concentration of 1g/l is recommended if chlorine is not desired. (Not suitable in combination with EPDM liner)
